What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

It means being part of a community that is supportive, inclusive, and encouraging. It also means having a deep connection and experiential understanding with people who are so often willing to take the time to lend an ear or a shoulder. It means being both welcomed and welcoming!

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

Academically, as a Master’s of Creative Writing & Literature student at the Harvard Extension School, it means writing stories with queer central characters to diversify what’s out there for creative consumption. Professionally, it means bringing the queer, open-minded, inclusive perspective to the table at all times.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

Be gentle with yourself. It’s okay to not be totally sure of who you are yet—it’s not a race. Take your time in figuring out who you are and check in with yourself and trusted friends along the way. Know that you don’t have to go through this alone—you’re not the first person to have this experience! Seek out a diverse group of perspectives and friends who’ll help you grow into the best, most authentic version of yourself.

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

I would be happy to offer support and advice to those who need it. I can also help find resources outside of myself for any questions I can’t answer.

What are your areas of expertise?

Professionally, I’m the Program Coordinator at the Center for the Environment. I administratively support our undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral programs. I also assist with our online/social media presence, creating content and updating our website. Academically, I study creative writing and literature, with particular interests in narrative nonfiction and screenwriting/playwriting. I’ve made many a personal website/online portfolio and read many a resume/cover letter, so I can lend my eyes and creativity to students who may need help in those departments. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time running/hiking in trails and making art! Happy to discuss any and all of the above.
