What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

Identifying as a queer parent to me means being proud of how my family is different.

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

I believe being a queer parent has helped me be more aware of inequality in the world around me. I became aware of my white privilege right around the time I came out, so they will always be linked for me. Every role I've held has had some element of advocacy and making systems more equitable.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

I would tell myself that I was doing a great job and to keep doing what I was doing. I'm glad I came out to myself and others early in my college career and had many queer friends.

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

I am happy to talk with anyone who is interested in the field of leadership development, community engagement, or non-profit management. Prior to working at HKS, I worked in the field of immigration advocacy for ten years.

What are your areas of expertise?

Queer parenthood (my wife and I have two young children) Leadership development Community engagement & advocacy Immigration advocacy
