What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

Identifying as BGLTQ is to claim the intersectionality of queer identity and to understand where heteronormativity exists and to address its impact on queer life. Self-identifying in the workplace, to me, is a way of communicating that I live out and that I am open to discussing that part of my identity, as it is not separate from my professional one.

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

It hasn't - and I'd hope that no academic nor professional journeys would be impacted by one's sexual orientation or their choice to claim it publicly (or not to). It should be a non-factor. Talk to me about why I feel this way.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

Listen more, and ask questions.

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

A second opinion (ha! jk); I'm a great coffee companion for those on campus. Happy to chat with anyone that has a specific question. Also available to discuss goal-setting and goal-getting, though there are plenty of HU resources on the topic.
