What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?
I've been involved with LGBT/Queer activism since 1969 and have been involved in numerous aspects of the movement(s) and publications. As a writer on LGBT topics and organizer it has been, in many ways, my career.
How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?
My queer identity -- and writing about it and responding to the world -- has, essentially, shaped my professional life as a journalist, independent scholar, writer, and organizer.
What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?
I am happy to chat with anyone about all topics related to activism, politics, LGBTQ issues, popular culture, and the media.
What are your areas of expertise?
I teach courses in LGBT/ HIV-AIDS history, cultural studies, media analysis, movies, and contemporary politics. My journalism and writing is often on these topics, and I have written extensively, on sexuality, popular culture, children's literature, music, film, and literature.
