Portrait of Stephanie Burt

What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

It's my community, or one of my communities. I want to be here, in particular, for people who are still figuring out identities and visibilities that are new to them. It was once new to me too, and not so long ago.

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

I have written about this at some length! Start here.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

Find your communities (plural), including queer communities, and go out of your way, if you have to, to meet not just friends, not just queer friends, but trans friends, if you can (and now that it's 2017 you totally can), both peers and potential mentors.

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

A lot, I hope. Come talk to me!

What are your areas of expertise?

I write about poetry, mostly, but also SFF, comic books, other contemporary cultural production, obscure pop records, and trans stuff. Come ask!
