What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

The world we live in does not always accept sexualities that don't fit into the mainstream and most people assume that everyone is, or should be. Identifying with the BGLTQ community means that I accept everyone's uniqueness.

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

Taking a stand for equality everywhere and every day has made a big difference. My experiences early on in my career, and in life, have taught me I want to be visible and given the confidence to stand up for myself and for others.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

This is what I actually said to myself right before I came out while I was in college: "being gay does not change who you are as a person, I am still the same, I am a good person. This just a part of me. I'll keep doing the things I love... my studies, my hobbies, my friends, and connect with other gay people and who can help explore my identity further".

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

Always keep the focus on your goal. Overall, when preparing for an interview, a networking event, etc, remember to market yourself and sell your skillset. Stand out for the right reasons, look the part, tailor your elevator pitch, prepare meaningful anecdotes, and ask unique questions. Also, quantify your achievements. This also applies to your regular life, outside work.
