What does identifying (or not identifying) with the BGLTQ community mean to you?

I love being queer. Proudly identifying as LGBTQ+ has helped become more intensely and unapologetically myself -- funnier, weirder, louder, and stronger. My community is made up almost entirely of queer folks, and in that community I have found immeasurable love and support.

How, if at all, has your identity shaped your academic and/or professional journey?

I cannot help but be passionate about diversity and inclusion, both here at Harvard and in the world. In my work, I strive to make space for those who need it most and to uplift those voices we do not hear frequently enough.

What advice would you give to yourself when you were an undergraduate?

First, go to office hours! You don't have to have a deep burning question (although a little curiosity never hurts). You can literally just go introduce yourself and have a conversation. Nine out of ten professors will be delighted to chat with you. Second, take the T into Boston every now and again! There is a whole world outside of Harvard Square, and you should take advantage of it. I especially encourage LGBTQ+ women to venture out to Jamaica Plain, where we are numerous and visible!

What support can you provide to current undergraduate BGLTQ students who are hoping to enter into your field?

I would be delighted to meet with any students with interests in higher ed, religion (my undergraduate concentration), or international affairs. And I'm happy to talk to first-generation students or students of color any time, about anything!

Additionally, if students are interested in connecting with LGBTQ+ Harvard alumni from fields other than my own, I am happy to help facilitate connections through Harvard's LGBTQ+ alumni group (hgsc.org).

What are your areas of expertise?

Higher education, international affairs, Islam, religion and politics
